Asphalt is an ideal material for road construction - durable and low in cost, but asphalt layers also have a low tensile strength which can be exceeded even by low strains. Therefore the heavy traffic often creates cracks and potholes, which can lead to a reduction of both the serviceability and lifetime of the asphalt pavement.
